First class

Hi everyone.

I hope you enjoyed your first class. Why not use this opportunity to write your comments about the class? Also, if you chose your book, why not share this with the class so as to avoid picking the same subjects?

I`m looking forward to reading your comments,

Olivier

  1. For my part, I'll take the Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald.

The first poem, "Penny", is all about the feeling of nostalgia. It's about how that person remembers his past through one little object, the penny. I can definitely relate to that and I'm sure most people can. Seeing an object and getting thrown back into a reminiscence of past memories is not uncommon. This poem is one that most people can relate to which makes it pretty good in my opinion.

Finally, the poem "Out Out" is all about the futile nature of human life. The entire poem leads to the main character's death only to end in a small shrug from his own family. "And they, since they were not the one dead, turned to their affairs". In this sentence, we clearly see people just move on from one's death which will soon be forgotten and will have been meaningless. It's pretty depressing, but again, it's quite good because it leads people to think without being hard to understand.

  2. "Lettres Anglais" looks like a very interesting course. No doubt that we will learn a lot about English and its various facets. The two poems that we read were a bit difficulty to understand. The explanation really helped me to comprehend the meaning of both texts.
The book that I choose is "Oranges Are Not the Only Fruit" by Jeanette Winterson. The description of the story looked very original.
Hope that we will have a lot of fun together!

  3. I agree with Émilie, without the explanations the poems were a little bit difficult to understand (at least for me). However they were different from those we read normally (they were like short stories) and that was more entertaining than reading about feelings as we usually do.
I chose the novel ``1984`` from the author George Orwell.

  4. I especially liked the poem "Out Out". At first, I wasn't concentrated when I was reading it, so it was hard to understand what was happening in the poem. After the second reading, everything seemed a lot more clear (and of course with the teacher's explainations). The ending was predictable, but still shocked me... I always loved the way writters write a poem, but telling a story in it at the same time is really interesting. Poems are composed with some few simple phrases, yet with full of emotions. We can easily imagine the scene and actions. Moreover, the feeling we got while reading it is just amazing!

For the book, I think I'll choose "The Life of Pi" by Yann Martel... But still not sure at 100%........

  5. The first class was really interesting. I pretty like English literature; especially, we will have lots of reading to do in the class.
We read two poems in the first day of class. I was not quite understand what do the poem’s meaning, but it did give me some reflex ion about the words that author used. However, I understood the context after the explanations of teacher.
I am thinking about taking the book Flours for Algernon as my book choosing, but I am still thinking about my choice.

And for my book, I'll take ''The Catcher in the Rye'' by J.D Salinger

  7. I really liked the first poem,"Penny", because it was easier to understand and its "story" was quite interesting. I liked the evolution of the author's toughts and memories.
The second one, "Out out", lead to reflexion. I understood what it meant, but I couldn't quite understand its deaper meaning.
The course seems interesting, yet quite difficult. I like the fact that we have a lot to read; hopefully, the novels will be good!
As for the novel, I'd like to take "Of Mice and Men",by John Steinbeck!

  8. I particularly enjoyed the second poem "Out Out" even thougth it was hard to understand all the meaning at the first reading.
As for the course, it looks pretty interesting, but I believe that it is really difficult. In fact, I'm already nervous and I think that I will really struggle in order to overcome this course.
As for the novel, it's a bit complicated to choose because there is a lot of short stories.
Instead, I'd like to work on either H.P Lovecraft OR Edgar Allan Poe AT ALL COST!!!!!

  9. As for the two poems we read in class, I really prefer "Out out" . I think it denounces child labour which is even today a major issue in the world ! It was quite easy to understand the meaning of the poem.

  10. Hey !

''Lettres Anglaises'' looks an interesting course but I believe that it will be more difficul than I taught. I'm really scared and nervous about the final project; however, I'm totally sure that I'll learn new stuff with amazing people. :))

Instead, I would like to work on Fall on Your Knees by Ann-Marie MacDonald, which is in the Oprah's Book Club.

  11. Hello! haha

The poems we read in class were pretty nice and well-written, even though I prefered the second ''Out, Out'' by far. I like the story it tells. Olivier said that as we deciphered and go further in the meanings of poems, it might break the fun we have reading them, but (well for these two at least, for now) it really made the reading more enjoyable by doing that. I'm looking foward reading others!

As for the book, I am not sure a hundred percent if it is a good choice, but I'd had the idea of taking ''Gulliver's Travels'', by Jonathan Swift, and it's pretty old... 1721! Which I did not know and is pretty nice =D

Yeah, and the course will be hard work, lots of work, but it's worth it! It's going to be a nice session. Everyone is able to pass this class, I'm sure of it. So, I wish you all good luck!

See you all on Fridays haha,

  12. Both poems were very difficult to understand, but I thinks all poems are hard to understand anyway. I prefered the first one, "Penny", because it was easier to read.

This class seems to be a lot of work, but I think it will be interesting because we will learn many things.

For the book, I would like to take "Alice in Wonderland" because I've never read it, but I really like the movie.

  14. I think that both poems were kinda hard to understand, but I loved Penny more because it had a touch of melancholy.
I chosed the ``Call of Cthulhu`` by H.P Lovecraft for the presentation.
