Hello everybody,
Here's another pearl of wisdom from Leonard Cohen for you to reflect on:
"Poetry is just the evidence of life. If your life is burning well, poetry is just the ash."
I am eager to read your reflections on the poems that we read this week.

To me, the poem "Penny" was about how money is worthless and how we must cherish life at its fullest. Although it is'nt alway true..... One of my favorite part was: "He saw pennies drop into an outstretched hand, words of blessing rise, clear and sweet beyond the world of beggarym loss, lies, into the surviving skies."
ReplyDelete"Out Out" It was rather cleaver to take an object, in this particular case, a saw, and to bring it to life. Overall I did'nt appreciate it as much as "Penny" because it was a very gruesome.

I think the poem call "penny" leaves us thinking about our values in life, how a penny can have its whole story.
ReplyDeletethe "out out" poem left me a little sad for that boy and i think the personification of the saw make it more real and make us understand how the boy is through it and how this thing can be good or bad for him.
the little part of macbeth is beautiful and so true.... I just love Shakespeare.

I prefer the one from Macbeth.
ReplyDeleteIt feels like someone is wispering the last turn of events at the end of any life : we all die. It also tells that life is noisy and makes no sens. I like the imagery, the style and the thoughts in this poem.

"Out Out" makes me think of the absurdity of human's conditions:
ReplyDelete"And they, since
they
Were not the one dead, turned to their affairs."
It makes me wonder how life is ephemeral, how it takes no time to be burried, how life goes on.
I think Shakespeare's poem is linked to "Out Out".
We live in a world where life seems meaningless, where we know practically nothing, even our reason of being.
Sandrine
According to me, all three poems are related to our vision of life, but not in the same way. They all describe how life is, according to the author point of view or state of mind. Here is (I suppose) the main message through lines.
ReplyDeletePenny: What the hell am I doing on Earth? What am I supposed to do here? So many questions I'd like to answer to!
Macbeth: Life is so fragile, be careful in what ever you'll do! Because if you don't, you'll probably die!
Out-out: Life is short, appreciate it like if every day was your last day. Poor little young boy.
Marie-Philippe Busque
The last sentence of "Out Out" by Robert Frost "[...] since they Were not the one dead, turned to their affairs." is a strong line. Made me think of how life is short and that when you die, life keep on going for others.
ReplyDelete...
...yep...
In Penny, the main character see the penny differently as when he was a child because the life changed him. The poem Out out is a bit sadistic and really sad. A saw cut the hand of a young boy and the life goes on as if he wasn't important. It proves how much life can be short...

"Out Out" is a bit strange.
ReplyDeleteWe will never react like that to the death of someone. In the past, families were also quite tied.
"Penny" is a good story about someone's life, It describes well how he feels and what are the reasons for.

I actually really liked "Penny". Makes me feel about myself when I daydream. You can be really depressed and a simple little object, such as a penny, can bring back so much good memories, and can mean so much you get lost in it. It's the power of symbolism to me, there are so much abstract feelings we can meet in an inanimate thingy, according simply to all it symbolizes.
ReplyDeleteOut out doesn't really get to me. I think it was nice reading it, but I couldn't say rather if I like it or not. However, I like how the poet plays with sonorities with is Rattles and saw sounds.
If your life is burning well, poetry is just the ash.
ReplyDeleteI kinda disagree on that one =P I mean, some people wrote some damn good poems in the midst of depression and negative emotions like that.
